VDI – Desktop as a Service

The workplace comes from the data centre.

With a virtual desktop infrastructure, the Windows workplace does not run on the device but in the data centre. The device only shows the picture — programs and data stay where they are managed and backed up.

What VDI is

A workplace that is not tied to the device

In a virtual desktop infrastructure, every workplace runs as its own session on servers in the data centre. Users log in and see their familiar Windows desktop — whether on the notebook in the office, the computer at home or the tablet on the road.

That changes three things. First, the data no longer sits on the device: a lost notebook is damage to property, not a data protection incident. Second, software is set up once, centrally, and applies to everyone, instead of being installed forty times. Third, a new employee is a login, not a hardware purchase with two days of setup.

The price for this is dependence on the connection: no network, no workplace. That is the honest downside, and it belongs in the decision.

  • The same workplace on every device
  • No company data held locally
  • Software set up centrally
  • New employees ready to start quickly
  • Older devices remain usable
  • Requires a connection that can carry the load

Our role

The infrastructure beneath the workplace

A virtual workplace needs three things: compute and storage in the data centre, a connection that can carry it, and the right Microsoft licences. With us, all three come from one provider — the data centres in Hanover, Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, the 100 Gbit/s connectivity and the licences through our Microsoft SPLA programme.

The price catalogue of 14 January 2026 lists, among other things, the Windows Remote Desktop Subscriber License (SAL) at €8.59 net per user and month, and the Windows Server Datacenter licence at €45.43 net per two CPU cores and month.

What your workplace looks like in detail — which technology distributes the sessions, how many users share one server, which line-of-business applications are added — depends on your environment. We design that with you instead of claiming a package here.

Through our partner network

The finished workplace is also available as a complete package

If you are not looking for the infrastructure but for the finished workplace including user support, the way leads through our partner network.

One of these partners is maja.cloud — the virtual Windows workplace from the cloud: programs and data are available in the office, when working from home and on the road, on every device, with the Microsoft Office suite included. Behind it is CM Systemhaus GmbH from the Hanover region, which also acts as the external IT department for companies — support with a ticket system, network, IT security, backup and archiving.

We tell you openly which route suits you: the infrastructure from us if you look after it yourself — or a partner if the workplace including user support should come from a single source.

Frequently asked questions

Who is VDI worthwhile for?

Above all where many people do the same work, where devices change often or where data must not leave the building — shift work, field service, sites with changing staff, regulated areas. For a few specialist workplaces with high graphics demands, the calculation often comes out differently.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Then the workplace stops. That is the downside, and it should not be played down: a resilient connection — with a second path if needed — is part of the planning.

Which licences do I need?

Windows sessions in the data centre require Microsoft licences, which we can provide through the SPLA programme. Which ones you need depends on the chosen technology and on what you already have today.

Do you build this yourselves or does it come from a partner?

Both happen. We build virtual workplaces ourselves, and we run the infrastructure on which a partner offers its Desktop as a Service — in both cases the machines are in our data centres. If you would rather buy a finished product than have a setup planned, we put you in touch. Either way, the data stays here.

Does CAD or image editing work too?

On request, with GPU-backed workplaces. A standard office workplace from the data centre does without graphics power; CAD, 3D and video editing need a graphics card in the machine that renders and compresses the screen content. We have the hardware for that — it is also in our AI servers. But it is an arrangement of its own with its own calculation, not a variant of the office workplace: tell us which programs should run and how many people work at the same time.

Where do the workplaces run?

In our data centres in Germany — Hanover with three availability zones, Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, certified to ISO 27001 based on BSI IT-Grundschutz, with no access under the US CLOUD Act.
