Databases

Your data in
German data centres

The database is the layer where outages get most expensive and maintenance is least popular. We run it on its own virtual machine: operating system, database software, security updates, monitoring and fault resolution are ours.

What we take on — and what we do not

A managed database is first of all a managed server. The database runs on its own virtual machine with guaranteed resources; we keep the operating system and the database software current, apply security updates, monitor the service and resolve faults.

What stays with you is the schema and the query. We run the database, we do not develop it. Where advice beyond that makes sense — indexing, query tuning, a migration path — we agree the scope beforehand; that is a service in its own right.

Which system makes sense depends on the application. The three pages below describe what MySQL and MariaDB, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server are each suited to.

  • Own VM with guaranteed resources
  • Maintenance of operating system and database software
  • Security updates
  • Monitoring and fault resolution
  • Backups as agreed

Three database systems

We run all three the same way. The difference lies in the application on top — and with Microsoft SQL Server, in the licence as well.

The standard behind web applications

MySQL & MariaDB

The common choice for web and content applications. MariaDB began as a fork of MySQL and remains largely compatible; both are open source.

What running it includes

These points are the difference between a database that has been installed and one that is looked after.

Its own VM

The database runs on its own virtual machine with guaranteed resources — separate from the application server if that is what you want.

More

Updates without surprises

Operating system and database software are maintained, security updates applied. Major version jumps are agreed with you in advance.

Monitoring

24/7 monitoring and fault resolution. Which service levels apply is set out in your contract.

More

Backups

Backups are taken while the database is running, and they are consistent — it does not have to be stopped. Frequency and retention we agree together.

More

Replicated and fail-safe

Replication, failover clusters and point-in-time recovery: we set them up and we run them. Which form fits is decided by the application.

Frequently asked questions about managed databases

What does a managed database cost?

The price depends on the resources of the VM and on the scope of support, and it is stated in the quote. What is priced are the building blocks around it: system management from €10.00 net per month and per system, and with Microsoft SQL Server the licence on top, from €12.15 net per two CPU cores. Tell us what the application needs and we will work it out.

Do you also take on the data model and the queries?

No. We run the database — operating system, database software, updates, monitoring, backups. Schema, indexes and queries stay with you or with your software provider. If you need support with that, we agree the scope beforehand.

Can the database run separately from the application server?

Yes, and in most cases that is the right arrangement. Separate web and database servers are the first stage of our cluster architectures; from the second stage the database layer is doubled up.

Where is the data held?

In our data centres in Hanover, Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, certified to ISO 27001 based on BSI IT-Grundschutz (BSI-IGZ-0552-2023). No CLOUD Act.

Which system should I choose?

If the application dictates it, the question is already answered — with standard software that is often the case. Otherwise: MySQL or MariaDB for common web and content applications, PostgreSQL for more complex data models, many concurrent writes, or when you need extensions such as PostGIS.

Do you build replication, clusters and point-in-time recovery?

Yes, all three. Replication keeps a second copy in step, a failover cluster takes over when the first node fails, and point-in-time recovery winds the database back to a moment before the error. Which of them you need depends on how long the application may be down and how much data loss would be bearable at worst — we work that out with you before we build anything.

How are backups taken?

While the database is running, and consistently — it does not have to be stopped. Frequency and retention we agree together. The backups sit on the infrastructure of our backup service, geo-redundantly in a second data centre if you want that.

What response times do you commit to?

We monitor around the clock, every day of the year. How quickly we intervene and through which escalation stages is set out in your contract — a time we have not committed to is not a time we state here.
