MSSQL
The database your
standard software demands
Microsoft SQL Server is a given wherever line-of-business and standard software from the Microsoft world expects it. We provide the system, run it, and supply the licence on a monthly basis — without you having to hold licence agreements yourself.
When MSSQL comes into the house
Microsoft SQL Server is rarely chosen freely — usually a line-of-business application brings it along. ERP, inventory and industry systems from the Microsoft world expect it, and at that point the question is no longer which system it will be, but who runs it and who holds the licence.
You can leave both with us. You obtain the licence from us monthly, billed per two CPU cores, and the instance runs on its own virtual machine that we maintain and monitor. You do not need a licence agreement with Microsoft of your own.
Which edition is required is usually dictated by the software vendor. The three we carry in our price catalogue are listed below.
- Licence monthly, per 2 CPU cores
- No licence agreement of your own needed
- Run on its own VM
- Maintenance, updates, monitoring
- Data centres in Germany
- No CLOUD Act
The licences at a glance
Billing is per two CPU cores and month, with a minimum of four cores per server — that is Microsoft's rule. The entry point therefore costs at least twice the line below. Which edition you need is usually dictated by the vendor of your application.
Microsoft SQL Server
- Web Edition Licence per 2 CPU cores · for publicly reachable web applications
- €12.15 / month
- Standard Edition Licence per 2 CPU cores · the usual case with line-of-business applications
- €194.30 / month
- Enterprise Edition Licence per 2 CPU cores · when the application calls for enterprise features
- €731.55 / month
Often needed as well
- Windows Server Datacenter Licence per 2 CPU cores
- €45.43 / month
- Windows Remote Desktop, subscriber licence per user
- €8.59 / month
- System management Windows — Managed OS Admin Support for the operating system
- €10.00 / month
- System management Windows — Advanced Monitoring & Patching Monitoring and patch level
- €60.00 / month
All prices net, plus VAT, as per the price catalogue of 14 January 2026. The resources of the VM and the scope of support for the database come on top and are stated in the quote.
What we take on
Provisioned on its own VM
The instance runs on its own virtual machine with guaranteed resources, separate from the application server if you want it that way.
MoreLicence on a monthly basis
You obtain the licence through us and need no agreement with the vendor of your own. Billing is per two CPU cores.
Maintenance and monitoring
Operating system, patch level and monitoring are ours. Which response times apply is set out in the contract.
MoreBackups while it runs
Backups are taken while the database is running, and they are consistent — it does not have to be stopped. Frequency and retention we agree together.
MoreFrequently asked questions about Microsoft SQL Server
What does an MSSQL licence cost with you?
Billing is per two CPU cores and month: Web Edition €12.15, Standard Edition €194.30, Enterprise Edition €731.55 — net in each case. At least four cores per server have to be licensed, so the entry point is twice these lines. The resources of the VM and the support come on top and are stated in the quote.
How many cores do I have to license at a minimum?
Four per server — Microsoft requires that regardless of how many cores the machine actually uses. The price per two cores therefore applies at least twice. We say so here because the entry point otherwise looks cheaper than it is: a Standard Edition starts at €388.60 net per month, not at €194.30.
Which edition do I need?
That is usually dictated by the vendor of your application. The Web Edition is cut for publicly reachable web applications, the Standard Edition covers the usual case with line-of-business applications, and the Enterprise Edition comes into play when the application explicitly calls for enterprise features. Tell us what the vendor requires.
Do I need a licence agreement with Microsoft myself?
No. You obtain the licence from us monthly. If you already hold licences of your own, we clarify beforehand whether and how they can be used in our environment.
Does MSSQL run on Windows or on Linux with you?
Both — what fits is decided by the application. On Linux the Windows Server licence falls away, which lowers the price noticeably; some applications do require Windows, though, for integrations that exist only there. With Windows the server licence comes on top; it is listed above at €45.43 net per two cores.
Do you build Always On availability groups?
Yes. Always On availability groups, failover clusters and point-in-time recovery: we set them up and we run them. Worth knowing is that Always On in the Standard Edition runs with only one database per group and without a readable replica — the full feature set requires the Enterprise Edition. What that means in your case we work through beforehand.
Can I move my existing MSSQL database?
In principle yes. How the move runs and what it costs we clarify beforehand — it depends on the size, on the acceptable downtime and on the edition.
Where do the databases run?
In our data centres in Hanover, Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, certified to ISO 27001 based on BSI IT-Grundschutz (BSI-IGZ-0552-2023). No CLOUD Act.
